Glasgow Caledonian University has an incredibly vibrant sports scene, much of it centred on the Arc health and fitness facility but also extending to a number of city venues with which it has links.

The Arc is situated in Glasgow’s city centre and as such serves both the student and neighbouring local community:

  • Hall 1 is a large multi-purpose venue used for such activities as indoor football, badminton, basketball, and volleyball.
  • Hall 2 again is a multi-purpose venue, primarily used for martial arts, exercise classes and dance.
  • Gym 1 provides a large matted area for personalised exercise routines and many accessories for functional training and stretching.
  • Gym 2 features a wide range of cardiovascular equipment and fixed resistance machines, plus a large free weights area.
  • Gym 3 also has cardiovascular equipment and fixed resistance machines, but is aimed mainly at advanced trainers with a selection of Olympic weights and training platforms.

In addition, GCU runs a wide variety of sports clubs that make use of Glasgow’s excellent sports facilities including Scotstoun, Kelvin Hall and Ibrox.

The university also has reciprocal links with the University of Glasgow and Strathclyde University.  Through the Talented Athletes Support Programme (TASP), which is jointly run by GCU, the University of Glasgow, Strathclyde University and Glasgow City Council, GCU talented athletes can use facilities at any of Glasgow’s three universities.

To be accepted onto the TASP, individuals must be fully matriculated students at one of the three universities involved, or on jointly operated courses, and meet strict selection criteria based on their sporting credentials.
