Glasgow students win gold

curling uni games win

Team GB’s Women’s Curling team secured the Gold medal on Saturday morning at the 25th Winter Universiade in Erzurum, Turkey. In a close match they beat Russia 7-6 in the final end to seal a dramatic victory after an excellent competition. The team had only lost one match throughout the tournament, their opener against the Czech Republic, and since then they had gone on an unbeaten run that stretched all the way to the final. The nail biting final came down to the final stone but skip Anna Sloan was able to handle the pressure and deliver the crucial point needed to claim the victory.

Four of the five winning GB team come from Glasgow further education institutions demonstrating the depth of talent that exists in the city. The team was:

Anna Sloan, Glasgow Caledonian University
Lauren Gray, University of Glasgow
Vicki Adams, West of Scotland University
Sarah Macintyre, University of Strathclyde
Claire Hamilton,  University of Strathclyde

The team claimed Team GB’s first medal of the 2011 Universiade, but they also made history by claiming the first ever Curling Gold Medal at a Winter Universiade. Anna Sloan was understandably delighted with the achievement, hailing it as one of the teams greatest. She said:

‘We won the World Juniors as a team two years ago and that was one of our best achievements, but for this result to go down in history is pretty amazing for us.’
